When we launched the first Sashiko Chore Jacket last year it came in the classic sashiko combination, white stitching against an indigo blue background.

It suggests distant blue mountains covered in snow, or the whitecaps on The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Creating a Sashiko Chore Jacket in khaki meant finding an alternative dye. Indigo only does blue. Sulphur dye, though, opens up greens, olives, browns and blacks.

Our khaki starts as a pigment that won’t dissolve in water, so it can’t simply be stirred into a bath and taken up by cotton. It’s chemically reduced first, into a temporary water-soluble form that can travel into and around the fibres. Then oxygen reverses the change, returning the dye to its insoluble state and locking the colour in.

Indigo works the same way but it sits around the outside of each cotton fibre rather than inside it, which is why old jeans wear to white at the knees, seams, folds and pocket edges. Our sulphur-dyed khaki is locked deeper into the fibre so it does something quieter.

The colour shifts tonally instead, getting lighter and softer the longer you wear and wash the jacket. And as the cotton fades around it, the 5.5km of meta-aramid stitching gains contrast, so the sashiko pattern slowly emerges.

Our jacket comes pre-washed to give it a worn-in look from the first day you put one on. How far it goes after that is up to you. Friction, sunlight, your washing routine and where you take the jacket will all leave their mark.

Everything else about the jacket is unchanged. Heavy-duty Japanese cotton from a mill that’s been supplying Japan for more than 120 years, 1 million meta-aramid stitches engineered to follow your body contours, bioresin buttons and pockets that look like they were drawn with the stroke of a calligraphy brush. It still works on a wall too, if that’s where you’d rather keep it.

And if it’s the indigo you want, the original is back in stock and still one of the best things we’ve ever made.
