Modern air-to-air heat pumps are one example of how heating and cooling are becoming more closely connected.
During warmer weather, they move heat from inside a room to the outside. When switched to heating mode, the process is reversed and heat is transferred into the room.
They don’t automatically replace a boiler. A boiler will usually heat radiators throughout the property and provide hot water, while an air-to-air system can heat or cool individual rooms.
For some homes, the two may work alongside one another. For others, particularly flats, extensions, garden rooms and properties without traditional central heating, an air-to-air system may have a more significant role.
This growing interest also helps explain why A/C availability came under pressure this summer. When temperatures rise, thousands of homeowners begin researching cooling at the same time. Manufacturers, suppliers and qualified installers cannot always increase availability at the same speed.
