One Invention That Changed Watchmaking

You may or may not have heard of the Millionometer—if you haven’t, now is the time to get to know this genius creation. Invented by Antoine LeCoultre of Jaeger-LeCoultre back in 1844, the Millionometer revolutionised watchmaking with its ability to refine the manufacture of watch parts. Here’s how LeCoultre and his invention changed watchmaking forever.

1. The Inventor

Venturing into watchmaking in the 1820s, LeCoultre learnt first-and-foremost from his father, who himself regularly invented new metal alloys in his workshop. From this experience LeCoultre went on to create a number of machines, including a pinion cutting device in 1826, a new winding mechanism in 1871 and of course the famed Millionometer in 1844.

2. A Stickler For Accuracy

A perfectionist, LeCoultre’s obsession with accuracy led him to create said Millionometer, a machine that measures microns—that’s a thousandth of a millimetre. Such a device hadn’t been seen before, making it an incredible feat. This allowed him to produce more accurate and reliable movements by better understanding the measurements of those he was creating.

3. Measuring The Immeasurable

But if you can’t measure a micron how do you build something that can? The tolerances of such a thing wouldn’t just need to be as accurate as what it’s measuring, they would need to be even greater. With zero way of measuring it, it’s an impossible task, surely? Not for LeCoultre, whose knowledge of metal and manufacturing feel proved up to the job.
