As the global wine world turns its focus to the release of the highly anticipated 2025 vintage, we also see value in securing back-vintages. Château Mouton Rothschild stands alone as the most exuberant, powerful, and opulent First Growth in the Médoc. Famously commanding the only alteration to the original 1855 Classification when Baron Philippe de Rothschild secured its rightful Premier Cru Classé status in 1973, this legendary Pauillac estate is adored not just as a highly structured wine of great concentration, but as a canvas of artistic expression, adorned each year with commissioned labels from masters like Picasso, Warhol, and Dalí.

Rooted in a gravel-rich vineyard south of Château Lafite, Château Mouton Rothschild's old vines allow Cabernet Sauvignon to reach optimal maturity. Vinified in their gravity-fed oak vat room and aged for 18 months in 100% new wood, the grand vin delivers an unforgettable palette of plum, cassis, and spiced cocoa, framed by layered structure and a towering finish.

“I think the 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild is pure perfection, and is has a ripe, powerful, yet weightless style not far off the 1982. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels, it’s just now starting to enter its adolescence phase and has sensational notes of ripe black fruits, smoky, scorched earth, pipe tobacco, and chocolate. Massively rich and opulent on the palate, with building yet sweet tannins and no hard edges, it’s one of those wines that needs to be tasted to be believed. Drink bottles any time over the coming 40+ years."

A concentrated, rich, textured wine in the vintage from the Médoc, it reveals classic Mouton dark, chocolaty fruits as well as spicy oak, graphite, and smoked tobacco. With plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe yet still present tannins, and outstanding length, it's a more foursquare, rich, mouth-filling style from this estate that will continue evolving for another 20-25 years."

"I loved the 2006 Château Mouton Rothschild, a complex, nuanced, flawlessly balanced Mouton based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot. Tobacco, cedarwood, lead pencil shavings, and both red and black fruits define the bouquet, and this is clearly in its prime drink window, with a terrific mix of ripe fruit and just developing secondary aromas. Full-bodied and concentrated, with sweet tannins, this elegant, layered, silky 2006 has another 20 years of prime drinking. The label comes from the famed English portrait painter Lucien Freud (1922-2011)."

"It was during lockdown that I really started to discover how well the 2007 vintage is tasting right now, and it was to celebrate a post-lockdown reunion with old friends that I first opened this wine in 2020. Tasting it again a few months later and it still jumps out of the glass with its seductively rich texture and spiralling aromatics, clearly showing how the best estates casually step over vintage limitations. The texture is strikingly rich, and as it opens in the glass with blackberry, cassis, slate and notes of chocolate shavings opening up even further. This has a long life ahead."

"The 2008 Mouton Rothschild checks in as a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot brought up in mostly new barrels. Undeniably one of the top wines in the vintage, it offers a rare opulence and sexiness in its awesome bouquet of crème de cassis, Asian spices, chocolate, and crushed flowers. Deep, full-bodied, powerful, and still young, it fills the mouth with fruit, has sweet tannin, and a great finish. It's still ruby/plum-colored, with no signs of evolution, but is far from unapproachable and is drinking incredibly well today. It will keep for another two decades."
