Critical Acclaim

"This is vibrant and fresh with firm, integrated tannins that melt into the wine. Medium-bodied, but with tension, focus and length. A bitter-orange note comes through. Drinkable now, but better in 2026." —James Suckling
"A jeweled magenta/ruby color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is perfumed with preserved flowers, kirsch, fresh herbs, sage, and mossy earth. Full and elegant, it offers a silky mouthfeel, ripe tannins, even acidity, and a lovely, pure, concentrated, fresh feel. It's long on the palate, with its mouthwatering salinity and prettier red strawberry-noted perfume lasting on the finish. It's both approachable now and impeccably structured to enjoy over the coming 15-20 years." —Jeb Dunnuck
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 when Giovanni Neri, inspired by the austere Sangiovese of Montalcino, purchased the 200-hectare Podere Casanova and began restoring its vineyards. His son Giacomo joined the family business full-time in 1986 and took over after Giovanni’s death in 1991, continuing the estate’s focus on site-driven Brunello. Tenuta Nuova began with the 1993 harvest from Le Cetine, marking Casanova di Neri’s move into the southern part of the appellation and a vineyard environment influenced by warmer Mediterranean vegetation. The estate developed the site through detailed study of microclimates, exposures, vine material and planting methods, with the goal of producing a Brunello that combines concentration with drinkability and the ability to age.
The 2020 Tenuta Nuova is 100% Sangiovese, harvested by hand during a slow, consistent ripening season and fermented spontaneously before 30 months in oak and 18 months in bottle. It opens with clove, laurel and wild blackberry, followed by almond and cherry, while fine-grained tannins and a long, licorice-tinged finish give the wine plenty of structure. With 97 points from James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck and 96 from Wine Advocate, it has the depth and freshness to complement a special dinner, particularly a Tuscan-style bistecca or a richly seasoned roast.
With outstanding critical acclaim, this is a serious bottle for a serious occasion, and the 2020 vintage has the structure to reward patience. Jeb Dunnuck considers it approachable now yet well suited to another 15 to 20 years of development, making it an appealing choice for the cellar or a memorable gift for someone who appreciates fine Italian wine!
