Most people shopping Chianti Classico stop at Riserva. One step above it sits Gran Selezione, the tier producers save for their best estate fruit, aged a minimum of 30 months and approved by a tasting panel before it can wear the name. Few estates make one every year, and prices usually reflect that. This bottle is the exception.

Bibbiano farms Vigna del Capannino organically in Castellina, the corner of Chianti Classico known for its fuller, richer side. Wine Spectator gave the 2021 95 points: "Black cherry, blackberry and violet notes permeate this fresh, detailed red. Solidly structured, with fine harmony, expression and length." James Suckling called it "a focused, serious and well-driven gran selezione" at 94 points.

If you drink Chianti Classico regularly, this is a chance to taste what the appellation does at the top of its range. It's drinking well now, and Wine Spectator expects it to keep improving for a year or two yet.

Cheers!
