Great Vintages of The Last Two Decades

Hi -,

Across the last two decades, a handful of vintages stand apart. 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2019 are widely recognized as the defining red wine years for Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Piedmont. We’ve gathered standout wines from these benchmark seasons, your opportunity to explore the vintages that shaped modern fine wine.

2019
2019 stands as a reference-point modern vintage, producing wines with clarity, lift, and impressive definition. In Bordeaux, leading expressions of the year include structured, finely etched Cabernet blends from estates such as Pichon-Lalande and Giscours. Piedmont excelled with classically built Barolo and Barbaresco, with standout examples from Roagna and Paolo Scavino. Napa Valley delivered vibrant, polished Cabernets, including Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Silver Oak, while Burgundy produced elegant reds and whites marked by purity and precision.

2016
2016 is regarded as one of the decade’s most complete and sought-after vintages, producing wines of remarkable balance and structure. Top Bordeaux examples include the firmly built, age-worthy styles of Léoville Barton and Cos d’Estournel. Napa Cabernets from Inglenook and Ramey show focus, depth, and clear site expression. Burgundy’s small yields resulted in concentrated, finely detailed wines, while Piedmont offered some of its most harmonious Nebbiolo, with long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco throughout the region.

2015
2015 offers an opulent, sun-driven profile, yielding wines with generous fruit and early appeal. In Napa, estates such as Dominus and Hall produced richly textured, expressive Cabernets. Bordeaux highlights include ripe, approachable wines from multiple communes. Burgundy reached exceptional heights, with Joseph Drouhin and Ponsot among the producers defining the vintage’s purity and concentration. Piedmont contributed aromatic, approachable Barolo and Barbaresco, well suited to mid-term aging. 2010
2010 remains one of the era’s cornerstone vintages, with wines built for depth, structure, and longevity. In Bordeaux, leading examples include the powerful, finely constructed wines of Château Margaux and Lynch-Bages. Napa Valley produced cool-season Cabernets with layered fruit and precision, including bottlings from Montelena and Mondavi Reserve. Burgundy showed exceptional harmony, while 2010 Barolo and Barbaresco, from estates across the region, rank among the most complete and age-worthy Nebbiolo expressions of the modern era.

2009
2009 produced generous, deeply fruited wines, shaped by ideal ripening and a warm, luminous season. Notable Bordeaux examples include the plush, expressive styles of Pontet-Canet and Clinet. Napa Cabernets such as Silver Oak Napa and Ramey show polish and early drinkability. Burgundy’s wines are bold, ripe, and concentrated, while Piedmont delivered traditionally structured Barolo and Barbaresco with impressive depth and aging promise.

These five vintages showcase the best of Napa richness, Bordeaux classicism, Burgundy finesse, and Piedmont’s noble Nebbiolo. Explore these landmark years while top selections remain available.
