Last night we hosted our 6th Meet the Winemaker dinner of the year and it was a truly special one. Julie from Heaphy Vineyards joined us for an evening that reminded us exactly why we love what we do. Great wine, great conversation, and a room full of people who genuinely wanted to know the story behind what was in their glass.Ā
Tellingly, over 150 bottles of wine were purchased on the night, which gives an insight into how much those who tasted these wines, enjoyed them, and wanted them in their fridge. The Heaphy range did not disappoint, and to celebrate a brilliant night, we're giving you 20% off the wines this weekend.Ā
These wines are different. They are not Marlborough. What shone through last night, is the quality and ability for these wines to pair with food, in a way that fine French wines would. In other words, think Sancerre, rather than New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in terms of style. Julie was quick to point out the difference in quality that Heaphy is aiming for, and that showed last night.Ā
Heaphy Vineyards sits high above Tasman Bay on the Moutere Hills in Nelson, New Zealand, one of the country's most naturally gifted wine regions.Ā Their vines were first planted in 1973, making them among the oldest productive vineyards in New Zealand, and that age shows in the depth and character of every bottle. TheĀ Sauvignon Blanc is a Gold Medal winner at the Decanter Awards 2024, rated 95 points, and it earns every bit of that recognition. Bright, racey and full of texture, with fragrant gooseberries, passionfruit, vivacious nettle greens and a zesty lemon core, it's a bracingly pure style that really sets itself apart from your average
New Zealand Sauvignon.Ā
TheĀ Chardonnay is something special, made solely from Mendoza clone vines planted in 1974 on Moutere's rich clay soils, aged in old puncheons for complexity and roundness, with a slightly smoky, mineral character, a delicate saline palate and a hint of peach running through it.Ā
TheĀ Pinot Noir is bright and expressive, with aromas of red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry lifted by hints of spice and dried herbs, the palate supple and juicy with fine tannins and a gentle savoury note that carries through to a refreshing finish.Ā
Then there are the two Rieslings, which were a real highlight of last night.Ā
TheĀ Heaphy Riesling comes from 30-year-old unirrigated vines on Moutere clay and picked up a Gold Medal and 95 points at the 2024 International Wine Challenge, while theĀ Moutere Old Vine Riesling is made entirely from the estate's oldest block, planted in 1973, with grapes hand-picked and fermented across stainless steel, old puncheons and even a Drunk Turtle Amphora for a truly distinctive mouthfeel. These are wines with real story and real craft behind them.

The Pradel de Lavaux family has cultivated vines in Saint-Ćmilion since the seventeenth century. The family winery ChĆ¢teau Martinet in Libourne, serves as the operations hub for multiple domains under their ownership, including Saint-Pierre, Clos du Vieux Plateau Certan, Haut Cloquet, and Clos des Galevesses in Pomerol. Axel has managed the family business overseeing winemaking at the estates and the operation since 2014. The estates are based amongst the
finest and best terroir of Saint Emilion, yet the wines are reasonably well priced for wine drinkers and collectors alike. He is an incredibly talented winemaker, a storyteller and a really interesting person. It is going to be a night of stories, fine wines and enjoyable food Ā from the estates that WineOnline.ie are really proud to represent. We have represented these wines for over 5 years now.
