Last Sunday was International Pinot Grigio Day, and it got us in the mood to hunt for our top pick. When most people think Pinot Grigio, they think of wines from the Venetian area of northern Italy. Those light, crisp, reliably drinkable whites that do the job and not much more. And fair enough, that style built the grape's reputation. But there's another Pinot Grigio story being told further south, in Tuscany, and it's a very different
one.
The clay and limestone soils of Tuscany produce Pinot Grigio with real substance, wines with texture, finesse, and a depth of character that their northern cousins rarely reach. This is gastronomic wine territory.
Ruffino La Solatìa Pinot Grigio, Toscana IGT is a perfect example of what we mean. Grown on the La Solatìa Estate near the medieval town of Monteriggioni, close to Siena, the grapes come from loam-silty-clay soils rich in limestone and travertine rock. It's the kind of ground that gives wine its spine and complexity.
After harvesting by hand, the wine is fermented in a mix of stainless steel and ceramic amphora, then aged for five months on lees with bâtonnage. Those ceramic vessels with their high thermal insulation and very low oxygen permeability are key to what makes this wine so interesting. They give texture and character without masking the fruit.
In the glass, it's bright straw yellow with aromas of pear, tropical fruit, and elegant floral notes of broom and hawthorn. On the palate, there's a superb balance between aromatic freshness and acidity, finishing long and saline.
We poured this recently at our Ruffino trade and consumer events, and La Solatìa turned out to be one of the quiet stars of the night. It's the kind of wine that stops people mid-sip, with a few "wait, this is Pinot Grigio?" moments from guests who came in expecting something light and simple. Always a good sign.
This is Pinot Grigio for people who think they don't like Pinot Grigio.
Now on offer at €16.80 a bottle (down from €21!) — it's well worth stocking up!
Cheers,
Will

WineOnline.ie are delighted to have Julie Ruiz join us for our 5th Wine dinner of 2025. Heaphy Vineyards is a small winery in the north-west corner of New Zealand’s South Island, a region named Nelson Tasman. The winery is situated high above Tasman Bay on the Moutere Hills, where our 10ha of long-established vineyards are defined by Moutere’s signature clay soils. First planted in 1973, the vines are amongst the very oldest productive vineyards in New Zealand, and that is
what makes these wines exceptional, and very distinctive.
