The original Hammock Throne® was designed to feel beautiful, inspiring, and experiential, more like a personal escape than a typical piece of outdoor furniture. The real American Maple wood curved arms became one of its defining features and a major reason people fell in love with the Throne.
But over the years, we kept hearing the same thing
from customers:
“I wish I could leave this outside year-round.” “I wish there was a version better suited for harsh climates, salt air, rain, or pools.” “I wish there was a more accessible version at a lower price point.”
At first, solving that problem seemed straightforward: make a metal version. It turned out to be anything
but simple.
Most wood-grain finishes in the outdoor industry are applied to flat surfaces or very small curved surfaces, things like trim pieces or water bottles. Applying a realistic wood finish to large, sculptural metal arms with continuous curves, flowing geometry, and no hard edges was considered nearly impossible. Every early prototype looked obviously fake. The wood grain warped around curves, patterns stretched unnaturally, and the finish lacked the depth and warmth of real wood.
On top of that, most wood-print finishes weren’t designed to truly withstand years of outdoor exposure. UV, moisture, salt air, and weather would eventually break them down. We weren’t interested in making a cheaper imitation of the original Throne. If we were going to do this, it had to genuinely live up to the beauty and presence of the original American hardwood version.
So we spent nearly two years in development and invested several hundred thousand dollars into R&D, an enormous investment for a small company like ours. We worked through countless prototypes, finishes, manufacturing techniques, and application methods to develop what became CastGrain™, a proprietary all-metal arm system that combines the durability of architectural-grade outdoor metal furniture with a
highly realistic wood-grain finish applied by skilled craftspeople by hand.
