Hello ,
When Angelo Gaja released Gaia & Rey in 1983, he challenged one of Italy's deepest traditions.
At a time when Piedmont was devoted almost exclusively to Nebbiolo, Gaja planted Chardonnay in the Langhe and aged it in French oak barrels, creating a wine that would become one of Italy's most influential and collectible whites. Named for his daughter Gaia and grandmother Clotilde Rey, Gaia & Rey remains the benchmark against which Italian Chardonnay is measured.
The 2023 vintage marks an important new chapter in that story. Under the leadership of Gaia Gaja, the wine is now produced entirely at the family's newly completed Langhe Alta winery, a dedicated facility built specifically for white wine production at 650 meters above sea level.
Antonio Galloni awarded the wine 96 points, calling it "one of the finest Gaia & Reys I have tasted." The 2023 combines remarkable energy and precision with layers of apricot, white flowers, baked apple, and chalky minerality, delivering both immediate appeal and the structure for long-term aging.
For collectors, this is more than a new vintage release. It is the first Gaia & Rey produced entirely within Gaja's next-generation white wine project—a milestone bottling from one of Italy's most important estates.
