Daily Skimm: There's no crying in baseball
Skimm'd with a strawberry smoothie JULY 12, 2017 READ IN BROWSER Skimm'd with a strawberry smoothie QUOTE OF THE DAY "Soppressata" - Just one of the deli meats that NYT columnist David Brooks used in a sandwich metaphor about America's class warfare. It got sliced up. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND The Story The words 'email' and '2016' are in the news again. What's going on? Last June, President Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer on the promise that he would receive damaging information about Hillary Clinton. He was told this info was coming from the Russian government, which was actively trying to help his dad's campaign. We know this because yesterday, Don Jr. posted the entire email chain from when he set up the meeting. Wait...back up. There are multiple investigations into whether Trump's campaign team colluded with the Russian gov to tip the election in Trump's favor. Earlier this week, the New York Times broke the news about Don Jr.'s June 2016 meeting. Then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner - Trump's son-in-law who is now a senior White House adviser - also sat in on it. At first, Don Jr. said the meeting was about a US-Russia adoption program. But the NYT's report said 'was it tho' and showed the receipts. Then, Don Jr. changed his story. And ended up releasing all the relevant emails himself. What are people saying? Don Jr. says 'this is a whole lotta nothing' and that he's in the clear since the Russian lawyer didn't end up having any info. Which is why, he says, he never told his dad about the meeting. President Trump applauded his son for "his transparency." Critics say this is the clearest sign yet that members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. Anything else? Yup. Today, Trump's pick to be the new FBI director goes to Capitol Hill for his confirmation hearing. Expect Senators to have some questions about how he'd handle all of the above. theSkimm It is illegal for political campaigns to get help from foreigners. TBD on whether Don Jr. broke any laws here, but Special Counsel Robert Mueller now has the fun task of figuring that out. REPEAT AFTER ME... What to say when you spill coffee on your shirt before leaving for work... Delayed. That's what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's saying too. Yesterday, he told lawmakers they won't get their regularly-scheduled summer vacay until the Senate works through more of its to-do list. The big ticket item? Healthcare reform. You might've heard there's a debate happening in DC over how to repeal and replace Obamacare. The House passed a bill to make that happen, and now it's the Senate's turn. Last month, Senate GOP leaders put out a version that would cut Medicaid funding (psst: that's the gov program that helps low income people pay for health insurance) and slash taxes on high-income Americans that help pay for Obamacare. Surprise, Democrats were against it. But even some GOP lawmakers are saying 'nope, not down with this,' in part because of how many people could end up without insurance. So the Senate's been working on edits to get more votes ever since. Including, potentially keeping those taxes on high-income earners to help consumers pay for healthcare. Full circle. Tomorrow, the Senate's expected to show and tell Version 2.0. And they want to hold a vote on it next week. Busy busy. What to say to your coworker who just discovered the Snapchat hot dog filter... At least someone at Snap Inc.'s happy. Yesterday, the company's stock fell nearly 9%. In March, Snap Inc. had its big coming out party and was the largest US tech IPO in years. Months later, the company released its first financial report. It was not stellar. The highlights: user growth is slowing down and it's not bringing in as much cash as people were hoping. That's because users and advertisers are going to its competitor (Hi, Instagram Stories). So yesterday, Morgan Stanley - the bank that led Snap's IPO - said 'maybe we were wrong about the dancing ghost.' And Snap's stock took a hit. Speaking of hits, Internet companies like Facebook, Google, and Twitter are throwing some major punches. Today, they'll be speaking out against the gov's plans to roll back net neutrality rules - the ones that make it so Internet providers can't force companies to pay-to-play for connection speeds. Expect to see the words "Day of Action" trending. What to say to your friend who just came back from a Paris vacation... Oh la, LA. Yesterday, the International Olympic Committee said that Paris and Los Angeles can host the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. But that's because they were the only two left. Generally, cities love putting on the Olympics because they get 15 minutes in the global spotlight, which is great for things like tourism. But it's also very, very expensive to do things like build an Olympic Village from scratch. Brazil got stuck with a roughly $12 billion check after hosting the 2016 Summer Games. And in many cases, citizens end up paying for those costs in taxes. The other cities that initially put in bids to host - like Budapest, Rome, and Hamburg - pulled out of the running because of sticker shock. But Paris and LA are saying 'bring it on.' The cities have until September to duke it out for which year they host. Très bien. What to say when the group text is blowing up your phone during a meeting... This chain is worth it. THING TO KNOW 'Howdy, I'm the sheriff of' There's a new meme in town. It's emojis arranged to look like a sheriff. And the emojis indicate the type of sheriff. Peach emojis? Sheriff of peaches. Beer mug emojis? Sheriff of beer mugs. Howdy, I'm the sheriff of your new distraction. SKIMM LIFE SKIMM FAVES Skimm HQ is craving another long weekend. We know you are too.
